Private Label / OEM Eco Pet Toys, Explained
"OEM" and "private label" get used almost interchangeably in pet sourcing conversations, but they mean different things — and knowing the difference helps you brief a supplier correctly.
Private label vs. OEM vs. ODM
- Private label — you put your branding (logo, label, packaging) on an existing product design.
- OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) — the manufacturer produces to your specification, using their existing production capability.
- ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) — the manufacturer co-develops a new product design with you, not just branding an existing one.
Most natural pet toy brands start with private label on an existing SKU (fastest, lowest MOQ), then move to ODM once a product proves out and they want an exclusive shape or format.
What's actually customisable on natural materials
- Coffee wood — size, shape, and laser-engraved logo directly on the wood
- Coconut fiber & hemp fiber — size, shape, colour blend, and label/tag branding
- Loofah — custom shapes and catnip-fill options
- Packaging — kraft, vacuum-seal, or fully biodegradable, with custom printing
What a private-label project actually costs in time
Expect roughly a week for a free sample, a few days for a custom prototype once you confirm a brief, and 25–30 working days for full OEM/ODM production once the design is locked. Budget for this timeline when planning a launch date.
A common mistake: skipping the prototype step
